Came across this place totally unexpectedly. We were in Safdarjung and couldn’t think of a nice place to go to. Then of course, Zomato came to the rescue and we zeroed in on Depot 29 which was only a few minutes away from where we were.
At first glance, it looks like a very tiny place because the entrance is through a small alley-ish doorway. But when you go up and through the lift doors, you are welcomed into a warm and beautifully decorated, urban space.
We were ushered in and escorted to our table by very friendly staff. The space is very well planned, not cluttered, great lighting and just the right music (also not too loud!). We also had our friends’ baby with us so a high chair was promptly arranged for. These are not things that are worth mentioning, really but good, thoughtful and prompt service is a dying art.
So moving on to the menu, I really liked the fact that it was a well planned menu, mostly mexican fare, but not too long. There’s this thing about long menus. While they offer a lot of variety, most of the times, you are so confused because of the amount of choice you have, you end up ordering the most familiar thing on the menu. A smaller menu on the other hand lets you explore and try things you haven’t tasted before.
We ordered a Guacamole trio, an assortment of 3 types of guacamole – Classic, Pomegranate+Pine Nuts and Mango. This was served with house tortilla chips, baked and fried. We also got Fried Onion Rings, Fish and Mango Tacos, Prawn and Bacon Tacos and Classic Corn, Cheese and Jalapeno Quesadillas.
The food was great. We couldn’t find anything that was not okay with the flavours or the quality. The only thing that might not have been up there was the portion size. But apart from that it was all good.
A few downers though:
- We went to this place in May. Summer. Hot. Sticky. May. Yes! So the least you can expect is for the air-conditioning to be on. But unfortunately, about 40 minutes into our meal, their air con started playing up. At first we thought it was the hot spicy mexican food but umm, not really. It was the air conditioning which sadly they could do nothing to fix. Now if guests have been inconvenienced because of something, a small gesture would have been nice. However, nothing of that sort came our way. Bummer. 🙁
- They don’t really have a desserts menu. I know what you’re thinking! No effin’ way right! But umm, yeah. They do have dessert specials though. You ask your nice server and you should get your plate of freshly baked sweet craving satisfier. Not in our case. When we asked our server for the day’s specials, he said they were sold out. At 10 pm on a Saturday night. Their only dessert was sold out. ON a Saturday. I can’t say that enough because I am kind of shocked that could even happen. The restaurant wasn’t even crowded, there were 4 other tables occupied apart from ours. So anyway, that was a major major put off. But we had to get SOMETHING sweet so we just ordered the Classic Waffle. ALWAYS TO THE RESCUE. It did not disappoint 🙂
So, all in all it was a good meal, but not a great experience. The rating is low, not because of the food but a few other negatives we encountered. I do recommend going here for the food though. Before you place an order, just check if the air-conditioning is working and they have a dessert for you 😉
